Robert Dirk joins the Summerland Jets as Head Coach for the team’s inaugural season, bringing decades of experience in professional hockey, coaching, and player development. He will lead the Jets as the organization builds its identity, culture, and competitive foundation in Summerland.

Born in Regina and raised in Kelowna, Dirk played minor hockey in the Okanagan before joining the Kelowna Buckaroos of the BCJHL and the Regina Pats of the Western Hockey League. He was selected 53rd overall in the 1984 NHL Entry Draft and went on to an 11-year professional playing career.

Dirk played 402 National Hockey League games with the Vancouver Canucks, St. Louis Blues, Chicago Blackhawks, Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, and Montreal Canadiens. Known as a dependable and physical defenceman, he built his career on toughness, leadership, and a willingness to compete.

Following his playing career, Dirk moved into coaching and hockey operations. His experience includes head coaching roles with the Winston-Salem Icehawks, Saginaw Gears, Tacoma Sabercats, and Texas Wildcatters. In 1998, he was named UHL Coach of the Year while leading the Winston-Salem Icehawks.

More recently, Dirk served as Head Coach of the Okanagan Hockey Academy U18 Prep program, where he worked with young athletes preparing for the next level. His work in player development earned him a nomination for the Canadian Sport School Hockey League’s 2025/26 U18 Prep Coach of the Year Award.

Dirk’s coaching approach is built around accountability, work ethic, discipline, and individual growth. He believes players develop best when expectations are clear, teammates are committed to one another, and athletes are supported as both players and people.

As the first Head Coach in Summerland Jets history, Dirk is focused on building a competitive program the community can rally around while helping players prepare for their next opportunity in hockey and beyond.
